Buying Clear Vinyl Tarps Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Buying Clear Vinyl Tarps Guide

Buying clear vinyl tarps might seem simple at first—but once you start comparing thickness, sizes, and features, it quickly gets confusing. Should you go with 20mil or 30mil? Do you need UV protection, or just basic rain cover? I’ve been in the tarp business for over 20 years, and lately, more and more people have been asking me about clear vinyl tarps.

So, I decided to put together this straightforward guide to help you understand the differences, avoid common mistakes, and find the tarp that truly fits your needs—whether it’s for your patio, greenhouse, shopfront, or something else.

What Should You Pay Attention To Before Buying Clear Vinyl Tarps?

Size and Shape

Start by measuring your space—get the length, width, and height right. A tarp that’s too small won’t cover enough, and one that’s too big may flap around or sag. Standard sizes work fine in most cases, but we also offer custom sizing, zippers, or Velcro edges if your setup needs something specific.

Sizing and Measurements

Thickness

You’ll usually find clear vinyl tarps in 20 mil or 30 mil thickness. Thicker ones are stronger and last longer, especially in rough weather.

  • Go with 20 mil for light use—like blocking wind or covering outdoor furniture.
  • Choose 30 mil if you need more durability—like for greenhouses or worksite dividers.

To make it easier, here’s a general breakdown:

  • Light-duty tarps (about 6–8 mils): Great for short-term or light use like temporary covers, light rain protection, or dust barriers.
  • Medium-duty tarps (about 10–14 mils): Ideal for moderate use—covering equipment, protecting from moderate weather, or using for camping.
  • Heavy duty tarps (16 mil and above): Best for tough jobs like truck covers, industrial use, construction sites, long-term outdoor storage, or harsh weather conditions.

Thicker tarps can weigh more and cost a bit more, but they offer better strength, insulation, and weather resistance—especially if you plan to use them long-term.

UV Resistance

If your tarp will face direct sunlight, UV protection matters. A good clear tarp should come with a UV coating to stop it from turning yellow, drying out, or cracking over time.

Tear Strength

It’s not just about how thick it is. A good clear tarp should have reinforced edges and heat-welded seams to stop tearing—especially if wind or pulling forces are involved. You don’t want a gust of wind to rip it apart.

Double-Sealed Edges

Always check the edge construction. Double-sealed (or heat-welded) edges are much stronger than single-layer ones. They don’t fray easily and hold up better under stress, especially at the corners and where grommets are placed.

Metal Grommets

Grommets (those small rings along the edge) matter more than you might think. A good tarp will have metal grommets spaced evenly, so you can tie it down tightly and securely. Plastic grommets can crack, especially in cold weather.

Easy to Clean

Clear vinyl tarps are pretty low-maintenance. But for cleaning, don’t overthink it—just wipe it down with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or anything acidic. A quick wipe keeps it looking clear and new.
